That is a question that I believe most would give a simple and direct answer: No. Would the United States categorize her children? Although the Amendment suggests that all men and women are created equal, the fact is that the citizens of the United States are constantly being classified by race, gender, and/or ethnicity. So, if indeed the United States is one nation under God, why do we continue to sort ourselves though unreasonable and unethical factors. The misinterpretation of race has shattered the American society and for all that it stands for. We should correct America's immoral actions and assumptions that separate God's children in hope of reforming the United States toward equality. Race has always been an American issue. When the Europeans landed on the New World and saw an indigenous person he immediately him or her a savage. In time, the original "savages" or inhabitants of the land were made an inferiority to the white men and later wiped out. But later on, a more deeper insatisfaction of race took place. The African-Americans were brought into the "free" America as slaves. They too were considered an inferiority race. The idea of "race" is a human creation (Hacker, 4). People of the world have given themselves names like Caucasian, Anglo, Hispanic, Asian, and African-American. The names "Black" and "White" are quite exaggerated. It is obvious that no skin color even comes close to "Black" or to "White." Now character is a distinction between people. Lack of smart character is what led us to a history too ugly to ever repeat itself. I would say racism started when Christopher Columbus called the indian a "savage." Later on, it evolved when the African-Americans came to America. They were treated with much inferiority and humiliation. They were bought and sold like old furniture. It would take years before a man with the right power and courage would stand up for these e people. This man was Abraham Lincoln.

Every hour that ticks by 50 Americans die. Smoking is killing Americans daily. Approximately 1,200 people die a day from smoking. Most people don't understand what smoking does to their bodies. Smoking can damage lungs, rot teeth, and cause quick aging. For starters, smoking can take a toll on your lungs. Carcinogens are what makes up cigarettes. This chemical causes filmy build up on the inside of your lungs. This is also called tar. Tar buildup can eventually break down the cells of the lungs and lead to cancer.Emphysema is a condition that often happens when the smoke is released into the air sacs. Thus, the air sacs are destroyed and lose elasticity. People who suffer from emphysema experience shortness of breath and have a hard time with the slightest bit of exertion. Imagine getting up out of your chair and walking into the kitchen and by the time you reach the kitchen you are winded. Furthermore, smoking can cause your teeth to rot. Smoking decreases the calcium incorporation which means your bones aren’t as dense and more fragile.It also causes tobacco stains on your teeth. The Journal of the American Medical Association examined a group of 3,531 children aged from 4 to 11. They found that 53% of those with fillings of dental decay also had high levels of cotinine, a nicotine derivative, in their blood. As a result, passive smoking is responsible for up to 27% of tooth decay in children. Finally, smoking can cause you to age quicker. The moment you take a drag on a cigarette you are beginning to shave years off your life.When you smoke, you increase your risk of dying from heart disease, stroke, lung disease, eye disease, bone disease, and cancer of almost every organ. Tobacco smoke compromises the production of collagen, elastin, and skin proteins that make skin strong and elastic. Without the support of these skin components, the skin degrades faster and more severely. Smoking is one of the worst things you can do to yourself. I hope by reading this you will never smoke or stop smoking. Smoking will only damage your lungs, rot teeth, and cause quick aging. Just ask yourself. Is it worth it?

Along with spelling rules, schools once taught a standard pronunciation. The purpose was to maintain a standard speech easily understood by people in every part of the country and by non-native speakers who learn English as a second language. No one doubted that children were capable of learning the standard speech without abandoning whatever dialect they spoke at home. Now, however, a doctrine of political correctness inhibits the teaching of standard pronunciation with the result that the media has become the final arbiter. Certain pronunciations that were once considered non-standard are catching on, even when they fly in the face of rules I imagined were still being taught in the early grades. Apparently it is now possible to get out of school without learning the most basic rules for forming the plurals of nouns. I think I knew by fourth grade that the nouns life, knife, and wife form their plurals by changing the f to v and adding es. Yet I have heard an announcer on NPR use lifes as the plural of life. Ignoring the First Rule of Silent Final e (e makes the vowel say its name). I was startled to attention one day when I heard someone on the radio talking about gas-powered micro-turbans. I figured out from the context that the intended word was turbines. Another time I heard someone pronounce finite as if it would rhyme with mine it instead of pronouncing both vowels as long is. An NPR reporter once described a scene in which people were wielding staves (plural of staff). She pronounced staves as stavs. The sounds of s, sh, and zh Ive heard the word coercion /co er shun/ pronounced co er zhun, and the word resource /re sors/ pronounced rezorse. One of the most interesting drifts Ive noticed concerns the pronunciation of the noun house /hous/ and its plural houses /houz iz/. (NOTE: When the word house is used as a verb, the s is pronounced /z/.) Until fairly recently, the pronunciation of the plural houses with a soft s /hous iz/ was a nonstandard regionalism not even mentioned in the dictionary. Now, however, the pronunciation has been spread by announcers from the eastern and northern areas of the United States. (The same ones who pronounce tourist /toor ist/ as tor ist.) TV Meltdown Because actors come from different parts of the country, their pronunciations of certain words vary. I listened in fascination one evening to the actors in an episode of Numbers. The plot required them all to say the word houses numerous times. Some of them said /houz iz/ and some said /hous iz/. Josquin was often identified as a singer in the Cathedral of Milan in 1459 (Josquin des Pres 1), however, recent information reveals that Josquin did not go to Italy until the early 1480s (Josquin des Prez 3) Some records state that he became a choirboy in the collegiate church of Saint Quentin. His very first lessons in counterpoint were probably given by Johannes Ockeghem, whom he greatly admired throughout his lifetime. This experienced at Saint Quentin are thought to be the composer's foundation of his later connections with French Royal Chapel (Josquin des Pres 4). Josquin's first definite record of employment reveals that he was a singer at the chapel of Rene, Duke of Anjou in Aix-en Province. Scholars speculate that he may have transferred to Paris along with the rest of the chapel in 1948. Josquin became a member of the papal choir under Pope Innocent VIII. He spent the late 1490s in France probably in the service of Louis XII and probably stayed there until 1503 when Duke Ercole I of Ferrara hired him for the chapel there. Josquin was then forced to return to Italy (Josquin des Prez 5). During his stay in Ferrara, Josquin wrote his more famous pieces such as the Missa Hercules Dux Ferrariae and the setting of Misserere, Psalm 50, for five voices, widely acknowledged as one of his masterpieces. However, his stay in Ferrara lasted only for a year as he went to his hometown in Conde to evade the outbreak of the plague. He reaped immense fame in his hometown until his death in 1521 (Josquin des Prez 6). His Compositions Josquin's works include a variety of musical compositions ranging from masses, mass fragments, motets and chansons. From the list of his work, we can say that he is a prolific composer as he was able to write 19 masses, seven mass fragments, 60 motets, and 66 chansons (Josquin des Prez 7). Selected Motets A motet is a polyphonic composition based on a plain song. In fact, the Latin word for motet describes the movement of the different voices against one another. According to Margaret Bent (1997), "'a piece of music in several parts with words' is as precise a definition of the motet as will serve from the thirteenth to the late sixteenth century and beyond. This is actually very close to one of the earliest descriptions we have, that of the late thirteenth-century theorist Johannes de Grocheio (qtd. in Motet 2)." Ave Verum Josquin's motet, Ave Verum is typically used in the Holy Communion and Feasts of the Blessed Sacrament.
